Manning House, usually a quiet building over the holiday period, is currently buzzing with entrepreneurial spirit thanks to the USU’s INCUBATE program. The 8 successful teams, consisting of University of Sydney students and recent alumni, have been working hard in Manning’s co-working space to get their startups off the ground in 2013. We are pleased to tell you that many of the teams have already received multiple expressions of investment interest, with one startup already funded!
The last 5 weeks have seen the teams make progress in different ways; some have changed direction, some have already gained real customers and others are developing the first product prototypes.
“I’ve really enjoyed meeting a great group of founders – lots of passion and some interesting business models.” – Richard Baker, Investment Director at Blackbird Ventures
In December, INCUBATE hosted talks and workshops with some being opened to the public. INCUBATE program sponsor and mentor, Matt Barrie (Freelancer.com CEO), gave a talk on his experience with Singularity University’s Executive Program at NASA; David Kenney, Partner at Hall Chadwick, explained Australian corporate structure and grants; Drew Sing, who has recently moved from Silicon Valley to work in Sydney, spoke about the startups he has been involved with in America. We also had our own startup teams and Sydney Uni alumni give presentations about design thinking, web programming languages and startup metrics.
A large component of the program is the invaluable network of experienced mentors, many of whom are Directors and CEOs. We’ve hosted intense Mentor Meet-ups – where mentors meet with each team to offer guidance and advice.
Public Workshops with our program mentors are still running regularly so keep an eye for public workshop updates on our website and newsletter.
With only 7 weeks till Demo Day (during O-Week) the INCUBATE startups have a lot to do to achieve their desired outcomes, but we are sure many of them will go far beyond the milestones they have reached already through the program. Keep an eye on our website, Twitter and Facebook page for Demo Day information coming soon.
